IT’S TIME TO NOT ONLY START APPRECIATING, BUT TO START BELIEVING.

RCGNTN (pronounced re-cog-ni-tion) was started in August 2009 as a magazine dedicated to local talent.

With the lack of exposure given to Singaporeans passionate in their craft, there was a need to put the spotlight on these talented individuals to recognize what they can do, and to change the common misconception of local/ Asian talent.

We not only believe in exposure on these passionate individuals, but also to continue nurturing their talent through our networks.

This magazine is for those who chose not to give up; for those who choose to break out from the generic mold; for those who work or take (multiple) jobs on the side to keep pursuing their passion; for those who do it for the love not the money; for those who work hard and deserve a break; for those seeking inspiration; for those who need hope- this is for all of us.

With this, we plan to push Singapore to the world, for we all deserve some RCGNTN.

TITLE: CULTURES

Inspired by the numerous overseas art trips I went and culture insights with many foreign artists, curators, and friends. I discovered a common formula to sum up the general influences relating from the community, government and of course, the historical cultures.

FROM WITHIN TO EXTERIOR and VISE VERSA

A decent example like the culture of HIP-HOP origin from the States to the rest of the world, and countries like Singapore or Shanghai absorbing exterior influences; becoming a victim of globalization.

FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM and VISE VERSA

A huge capital like Beijing, draining from the strong Chinese propaganda and traditions influences to the people; unlike the city of Guangzhou, the people from the commoners inspiring the top level with improvements and demands.

SHAPESHIFTERS started with the aim to showcase local raw talents giving them a chance to exhibit their creations in a multitude of environments from LIFEBRANDZ attracting a diverse group of viewers. This is a good opportunity for participants to gain exposure and build their portfolio as well as exchange ideas and knowledge about art and design with fellow artists.

SHAPESHIFTERS has since established itself as an event to watch for as we bring out the freshest and best from the local arts scene. Happening thrice a year, we attract a wide range of audiences including friends and trendsetters from the fashion, creative and media industry as well as the mass of students from tertiary institutions.
